Hyundai Motor Group Reveals Solar Charging System Technology to Power Future Eco-Friendly Vehicles
- Eco-friendly solar charging system charges a vehicle’s battery using solar panels on its roof or body, improving mileage and reducing CO2 emissions
- Translucent solar roof is world’s first technology for internal combustion engine vehicles
SEOUL, Oct. 31, 2018 – Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors have today announced plans to introduce solar charging technology on selected Hyundai Motor Group vehicles. Electricity-generating solar panels will be incorporated into the roof or the hood of vehicles, and will support internal combustion, hybrid and battery electric vehicles with additional electrical power, increasing fuel efficiency and range.
The solar charging technology is being developed to support the vehicle’s main power source, improving mileage and reducing CO2 emissions. It can charge batteries of not just eco-friendly vehicles, including electric and hybrid vehicles, but also of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, thereby improving fuel efficiency.
Hyundai Motor Group is developing three types of solar roof charging systems: The first-generation silicon solar roof system, the second-generation semi-transparent solar roof system, and the third-generation lightweight solar-lid on the vehicle’s body.
The first-generation solar roof system, which will be applied to hybrid models, includes a structure of mass-produced silicon solar panels that are mounted on an ordinary roof. This system can charge 30 to 60 percent of the battery per day, depending on the weather condition and the environment.
The second-generation semi-transparent solar roof system will be applied to vehicles with internal combustion engines, for the first time in the world. Differentiated from the first-generation system, the second-generation system provides transmissive panel options, also satisfying consumers who desire a sense of openness. The semi-transparent solar panels are applied to a panoramic sunroof, maintaining transparency whilst charging an electric vehicle’s battery or an additional battery mounted on an internal combustion engine vehicle.
Applying solar charging systems to internal combustion engine vehicles will contribute to the increase in vehicle exports, by enabling vehicles to adhere to global-scale environmental laws that regulate CO2 emissions.
The third-generation lightweight solar-lid system, currently in the process of pilot study for applying to eco-friendly vehicle models, includes a structure that mounts solar panels on a bonnet and roof combined, in order to maximize energy output.
The solar charging system is composed of a solar panel, a controller, and a battery. Electricity is produced when solar energy from the sun touches the solar panel’s surface, which converts this by using photons of light from the sun and then creating the electron-hole pairs in silicon cells to generate solar electricity.
When a 100W solar panel is equipped, in 1 Sun standards (Summer noon, 1000 W/㎡ intensity of radiation) it produces 100Wh of energy per hour. In the controller, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), which controls voltage and current to increase efficiency of the electricity collected in the solar panel, and source transformation take place.
The electricity from this process is transformed to the standard voltage by the controller, then stored in the battery or utilized to decrease loads of a vehicle’s Alternating Current (AC) generator. Hyundai Motor Group took not only efficiency but also design into account while developing the solar charging system.
“In the future, various types of electricity generating technologies, including the solar charging system, will be connected to vehicles. This will enable them to develop from a passive device that consumes energy to a solution that actively generates energy,” said Jeong-Gil Park, Executive Vice President of Engineering Design Division of Hyundai Motor Group., who has developed this technology. “The paradigm of the vehicle owner will shift from that of a consumer to an energy prosumer.”
Hyundai Motor Group will launch the first generation of this technology into its vehicles after 2019 to help meet global regulations targets and improve vehicle fuel efficiency.

Hyundai Kona, Santa Fe and NEXO Win Silver Award from IDEA 2018
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 20, 2018 – Hyundai’s 2018 Kona, 2019 Santa Fe and NEXO together have been recognized as a Silver Award winner in the 2018 International Design Excellence Awards® (IDEA) by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) for their forward-thinking design and distinct styling. The three vehicles highlight Hyundai’s expanding SUV offerings and bold new design language. IDEA recognizes designs that improve quality of life and push boundaries through innovation in categories such as Automotive and Transportation, Design Strategy, Consumer Technology, Environments and more.
“As the automotive landscape continues to change, we are pushing creative boundaries with designs that reflect today’s vehicle drivers and owners,” said Chris Chapman, senior chief designer, Hyundai Design Center. “We are honored to see several vehicles recognized in this category, as it is a testament to our passion for ingenuity across our Hyundai lineup.”
As Hyundai’s first entry in the subcompact SUV segment, the Kona was designed with the “urban adventurer” in mind. Though small, the vehicle boasts toughness, with a “Spartan helmet” design in the front, created by wrapping the cladding from the front fender forward to surround the headlamps and down around the bottom of the fascia. Kona pulls together short, abrupt, sharp turns to have a spontaneous language and reflect the lifestyles of its young demographic.
Meanwhile, the all-new Santa Fe just reached Hyundai dealers. The face of the new Santa Fe is highlighted by Hyundai’s signature cascading grille and a composite light design comprising LED Daytime Running Lights positioned sleekly above the LED headlights. The exterior design is characterized by a powerful, wide stance and an athletic body that makes a statement from 100 feet away. The profile of the Santa Fe features a dynamic character line that goes all the way from the headlights to the taillights, and a larger daylight opening (DLO) with a satin surround that provides a sleek impression, along with better visibility. The vehicle stands strong on diamond-cut 19-inch wheels and a new rear design, featuring a muscular, high and taut shape.
The all-new 2019 NEXO is Hyundai’s second-generation fuel cell electric vehicle. Its exterior design echoes the innovative energy source, exuding pure and calm styling with its streamlined silhouette and floating roof. The NEXO is the first dedicated hydrogen-powered SUV, combining the utility and reliability of an SUV with cutting-edge autonomous driving capabilities, smart advanced driver assistance systems and one of the strongest powertrains in the segment.
IDEA is a premier international design competition recognizing and promoting design excellence across a wide array of industries and disciplines, conducted annually by the IDSA. IDEA judging is based on the following criteria for Design Excellence: Design Innovation, Benefit to the User, Benefit to the Client, Benefit to Society and Appropriate Aesthetics.

SAFETY
Cutting-edge SmartSense safety features have been added to the 2019 Elantra. Most of these features have been added to the SEL trim level and above meaning they are now available on 75 percent of the Elantra lineup. SmartSense safety features have been added to the SEL, Value Edition, Eco, Limited and Sport (SEL and above) trims and include the following:
- Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (camera-only type) that is designed to help detect and monitor the vehicle ahead and warn the driver if a collision may be imminent. The system also initiates automatic braking when it detects a slower or stopped vehicle ahead.
- Lane Keep Assist that detects the lane on the road and may apply steering wheel control if the vehicle leaves the lane when the vehicle speed is over 40 mph.
- Driver Attention Alert that warns the driver of tired driving patterns with an audible alert and visual warning displayed on the instrument cluster.
SmartSense features included on the Elantra Limited with Ultimate Package include:
- Safe Exit Assist that may sound an alert when a vehicle approaches from behind letting passengers know it may not be safe to open the door to exit the vehicle.
- Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection is a technology that utilizes both the front forward-facing radar and camera through sensor fusion to help detect a vehicle or pedestrian, and warn the driver of a potential collision. If the driver does not react to avoid the impact, the system may apply emergency braking in certain circumstances.
Additional Smart Sense Safety features include:
- Blind-Spot Collision Warning with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist.
NEXT GENERATION INFOTAINMENT: AUDIO/VIDEO/NAVIGATION (AVN) 5.0 WITH HD TRAFFIC
The 2019 Elantra also debuts with Hyundai’s next generation AVN 5.0 infotainment system. This system features an upgraded processor for greater responsiveness, as well as an 8-inch screen vs. the 7-inch screen in the last generation Elantra. Using presets with AVN 5.0 is a snap because AM, FM and SiriusXM channels are now combined on one screen and also feature HERE HD Traffic (without a subscription). A bird’s eye view has also been added to navigation maps and drivers can now get traffic flow and incident data without ever paying for a subscription via HD Radio.
The Elantra is available with conveniences like Infinity Premium Audio with Clari-Fi™, Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ and wireless smartphone charging.
ENGINE PERFORMANCE
The Elantra features two engine options that provide fuel efficiency and a third engine option in the Elantra Sport model. The SE, SEL and Limited offer the Nu 2.0L MPI Atkinson Cycle engine with 147 hp @6200 RPM and Eco offers the Kappa 1.4L Turbo-GDI with 128 hp @5500 RPM. The Eco model achieves an EPA estimated 35 mpg combined fuel economy rating thanks to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission.
ELANTRA SPORT TRIM
The redesigned 2019 Elantra Sport will debut later in 2018 and have similar design changes to the other models. Hyundai will release more details in the fall. Mechanically, it will have the same level of differentiation as the 2018 model. The Elantra Sport trim features a 1.6L Turbo-GDI engine, 6-speed manual transmission or available seven-speed dual clutch transmission, a sporty interior and revised trim headliner, advanced technology and connectivity, paddle shifters, sport front seats with leather, flat-bottom, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a sport instrument cluster and door trim garnish. The Elantra Sport features multi-link independent rear suspension which improves the dynamic performance and allows for greater flexibility in tuning.
TRIM LEVELS
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra offers 6 trim levels—SE, SEL, Value Edition, Limited and Eco or Sport. For a comprehensive overview on each trim, please refer to the Elantra specifications sheet available online or here.
