Driven: 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT

By Brandon Turkus
July 19, 2012

—Brooklyn, Michigan

Look, we’ll come right out and say it: we like small wagons and hatchbacks a lot. The formula is so simple: take a popular sedan, expand the trunk vertically, give it some unique styling, and voila, you get a small wagon. Besides maintaining the small-car driving dynamics of the donor car, you get a level of junk hauling that can’t be had outside of a small SUV/CUV.

Hyundai’s Elantra Touring was a prime example of a good small wagon. This European import was based on the Hyundai i30 and managed to combine style and function in a reasonably priced, efficient package. Folding the backseats down gave access to 65.3 cubic feet of space; just short of the cavernous Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen’s 66.8 cubic feet in a vehicle that was almost three inches shorter overall.

For 2013, though, the Elantra Touring has been replaced by this, the Elantra GT. Right off the bat, though, we were skeptical of this new body style. While the old Touring was a dedicated wagon, the Elantra GT is technically a five-door hatch, and it loses cargo volume accordingly. It’s down from a maximum 65.3 cubic feet to 51 cubic feet, although with the second row up, there’s less of a sacrifice, only 1.3 cubic feet is lost (23 cubic feet versus 24.3 in the old model). Overall interior volume is down from 125.5 to 119 cubic feet.

Consequently, Hyundai’s bogey is no longer the Jetta Sportwagen, but is far more diverse for 2013. Primary competitors are listed as the Mazda3, Ford Focus, Subaru Impreza, Volkswagen Golf, and Toyota Matrix (all in five-door hatch configurations, where applicable). The Elantra GT looks to be a fair match for this competitive set for multiple reasons, not the least of which is age; the Mazda3 and VW Golf aren’t long for this world in their current iterations, and the Toyota Matrix has been a zombie since NUMMI was taken over by Tesla. Only the Focus and Impreza have been updated recently.

Part of our love of affordable long-roofs is the unique style that these cars have over the more traditional sedans they are based on. In the GT’s case, it shares its face with the rest of the Elantra range, but walks a line between the blacked-out grille of the Coupe and the more docile face of the Sedan.

It’s clear from the profile that this is more hatchback than wagon, as the D-pillar slopes rather aggressively, leaving a fairly small window between the rear pillars. This doesn’t really impact visibility all that much, as the view through the two side windows is pretty good. The rear window itself is adequately sized, and we had no real complaints about rear visibility. Out back, a subtle spoiler is present, along with the standard wrap-around taillights. In a cool premium twist, the rear-view camera hides behind the Hyundai logo, popping up when the car is slotted into reverse.
Inside, it’s the same clean, stylish, and well-finished interior that we’ve seen on other Elantra models. Plastics feel no better or worse here than in any other Hyundai. While we understand the reasoning behind all three models boasting identical interiors, one of the highlights of the old Touring was that its interior was different from the sedan, and felt more high-class because of it. On the GT, it loses that specialness, and just feels like any other Elantra.

To be honest, we really aren’t going to say all that much about the Elantra GT’s powertrain, because we give fairly in-depth reviews of it here and here. It’s the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder that’s found in the Coupe and Sedan, delivering 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque. It also nets 39 miles per gallon on the highway. A six-speed manual is standard, while a six-cog autobox with a manual mode is an optional extra.

The Elantra GT is Hyundai’s first model to sport the brand’s new Driver Selectable Steering Mode system. Basically, this system allows drivers to switch between three different levels (creatively called Comfort, Normal, and Sport) of steering effort. Comfort requires the least effort, while Sport requires the most. The system is operated via a steering-wheel-mounted button, with the instrument cluster display showing which mode the driver is in.

We tested all three modes, and found the results to be negligible. There’s maybe a 15- to 20-percent difference in steering effort between Comfort and Normal, and Normal and Sport. It’s nice, but we feel like it’d make a lot more sense for this system to be on the Veloster Turbo, Genesis Coupe, or even the Elantra Coupe, rather than a five-door hatchback with no sporting pretenses.

In terms of on-road character, the GT is much more like the Sedan than the Coupe. That’s a good thing, as the Coupe’s rougher ride doesn’t do it any favors. Instead, the GT feels smoother over rougher sections of tarmac. Its biggest issue remains the level of vertical motion over undulating pavement, but it manages rougher stuff much better. While the Coupe would sidestep and feel unstable in mid-corner bumps, the GT is more composed. There still isn’t a great deal of feedback on hand here, but it’s about par for the course in this category.

Let’s be honest though, people that buy the Elantra GT are interested in practicality. Those buyers certainly won’t be disappointed. We mentioned the five-door GT boasts 51 cubic feet of space with the back seats folded down, and 23 cubic feet with the second row up. To put that in perspective, the only car in this class that has more space is the Subaru Impreza (but only by one cubic foot of cargo volume). Helping the cargo situation is a clever storage space under the floor of the trunk area that looks big enough to handle items that may slide around too much when left alone.

Backseat space is tolerable, as we were able to stuff Senior Editor John Beltz Snyder behind your six-foot, one-inch author with only a modicum of complaining. Those same backseats cleverly flip forward and fold flat, presenting a nice, wide loading space.

The hatchback has the highest starting price in the Elantra range at $18,395. Unlike the other two body styles, though, the GT is features only one trim level. In place of dedicated trim levels are two packages, the Style Package and the Tech Package. The Style Pack ($2750) includes a sport-tuned suspension, panoramic sunroof, leather seats, and seventeen-inch alloys. The Tech Pack ($2350) features navigation, a rearview camera, automatic headlights, and push-button start. Opting for the six-speed automatic will run another $1000. That makes for a fully loaded model running $25,245, out the door.

The pricing equation works out well for the GT. Its starting price bests everything but the Volkswagen Golf by around $1000. Optioned up, as our tester was and the Elantra GT still makes a fair bit of sense, costing around the same price as a loaded Subaru Impreza or Mazda3, and undercutting a navigation-and-leather-equipped Ford Focus by just over $2000. Even if price isn’t your determining factor, 39 mpg on the freeway and the sheer amount of cargo space make the Elantra GT a fine choice for a small wagon.

Hyundai Petitions for National Fuel Efficiency Month

by Christina Caldwell 06/14/12

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra gets an estimated 33 miles-per-gallon.

When gas prices yo-yo like they have this year – this week, they’re sharply down – almost everyone has fuel efficiency on their minds. But Hyundai wants Washington to have it in the forefront of theirs this August.

The South Korean car company is encouraging Americans to sign a petition to make August National Fuel Efficiency Month – a move they hope will bring attention to the environmental and economic effects of driving cars that conserve more gas.

Fuel efficiency is about much more than simply driving a fuel economical vehicle, Hyundai points out. Keeping tires properly inflated, keeping up with car maintenance, changing gas pedal-heavy driving habits and more can all contribute to getting more mileage for your fuel buck.

“As America’s most fuel-efficient car company, we want to inspire people and show them how fuel efficiency can help their wallets and the planet at the same time, no matter what kind of car they drive,” says John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America in a press release.

“There’s a day, week or month for just about everything else, so we feel the time is right for a national Fuel Efficiency Month to help shine a spotlight on the ecological and economic benefits here.”

Hyundai is the manufacturer of some of the most fuel efficient cars on the road, including the Accent, M/T Veloster, Sonata Hybrid and Elantra – all of which get more than 40 miles per gallon on the highway. The Sonata makes the U.S. Department of Energy’s number one most fuel efficient vehicle in the “large” category. For a full list of America’s least and most fuel efficient cars by class, visit the DOE’s fuel efficiency page.

That's What You Think!

To paraphrase Sally Field, you like us, you really like us!  Gary Rome Hyundai, Gary Rome Kia, and Jack Rome wanted to thank all our wonderful Facebook fans for their amazing comments and support over the years.  We try our hardest to make your car buying experience as easy, happy and least stressful as possible.  Whether it's from great customer and auto services, affordable prices, or just a friendly "woof" from Jack, we want you to feel like part of our auto family.  Here are some of the things you have said about us that we appreciate so much:

Gary Rome Hyundai:

Cecelia Loudon: My dad bought cars from your dad when he was on Northampton Street. Followed you down and have been there since you opened on Main Street. Have always been treated well from customer service, sales and the service department. On Hyundai #4 and am sure I will be back for more.
Cherie Costa: My husband & I have bought 3 Hyundai's from Gary Rome. We have all of our sales & service done at GR and we recommend Gary Rome to all of our friends and family. Going to Gary Rome is like going home. Will never buy a car from anyone else.
Sue Torres: First dealership where being female didn't make me feel like a sitting duck!
Kerry Margaret: As a new resident of Massachusetts and first time car buyer, you made the whole process simple, entertaining (great staff!) and most of all affordable. I was nervous when I walked in but walked out thrilled with a great new car! I have never had a problem getting my car in for service and look forward to seeing friendly faces each time! Oh and it helps that Jack is super adorable :) Thanks!

Gary Rome Kia:

Angel Don Cartagena: Wonderful, affordable, and reliable cars; polite, and helpful staff; and the place looks great; also love the dog :) GO GARY ROME!!!!!
Lynn Grutti: I love this Kia dealership because they helped me when no other dealership would! I had outgrown my VW Beetle but was stuck in a tough financial situation. The staff helped me not only get the Kia Sorento that would fit my new family needs, but also worked with me on financing I could afford. Over a year later & I am still so happy & grateful for all this dealership has done for me. Thank you again, you are the best!!!
Sheila Delgado: We have a piece of our family. We bought a orange Kia soul from Gary Rome last year after our dog past away. Nothing like seeing jack and picking out a "soul" for my baby. Very patient and great rates...

Jack Rome:

Richard H. Wheeler: My girl Sara eyeballs the TV whenever the ads come on. She hears the jingle and perks right up. I guess she thinks Jack's a looker.
Chad Wheeler: My son lights up every time the commercial comes on. "Daddy, doggy!"
Janet Lindsey: Dogs appeal to our sense of friendship, loyalty, devotion...Jack, you embody these qualities and your presence brings a sense of confidence to all those who walk through your dad's doors.....

Lucky Student To Receive Free Kia Soul From Gary Rome Kia

Gary Rome Kia of Enfield will be giving away a brand new Kia Soul to one eligible student from Enrico Fermi High School.

Enfield, CT -- Education is the stepping stone to a successful life, to becoming a productive member of society, and to bettering the world at large.  The British writer Gilbert K. Chesterston once said, "Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another."  The Gary Rome Kia dealership of Enfield, CT agrees that a good education is both timeless and priceless.  In concordance with this sentiment, Gary Rome Kia is holding a raffle to reward one deserving student at the local Enrico Fermi High School with his or her very own Kia Soul.

To qualify for an opportunity to win the raffle students had to show a dedication not only to their studies, but to outside interests and to their communities, as well.  Each potential winner has a grade point average of at least 8.0 out of 12.  He or she cannot have been absent more than 8 times, nor can he or she have any detentions, suspensions, expulsions, or been arrested in school or in the community.

Academics is only half the equation, though.  Being a good student also entails being well-rounded and socially active.  In order to earn a chance at the Kia Soul, each student must participate in at least 2 extracurricular activities in school.  Outside the schoolyard, each student must devote at least 50 hours of his or her own time to community service.

The drawing to declare the winner will take place Friday, June 1st.  Gary Rome Kia would like to recognize the achievements of all 14 finalists who qualified for the Kia Soul giveaway:

Hyundai Hope On Wheels To Surpass $57 Million In Total Donations To Support Childhood Cancer Research By Year-End 2012

Handprint Ceremony at the New York International Auto Show Marks Launch of Hyundai’s 14th Year in the Fight Against Pediatric Cancer and Introduces New National Youth Ambassador CJ George

NEW YORK – April 5, 2012 – Hyundai Motor America and its dealers announced today, at the New York International Auto Show, a commitment to break through a major milestone of $57 million in total donations to pediatric cancer research through their nonprofit foundation, Hyundai Hope On Wheels®. This level of funding places Hyundai among the leading funders of pediatric cancer research in the nation. As part of its 14th year in the fight against pediatric cancer, Hyundai’s President and CEO John Krafcik announced the 2012 effort and named C.J. George, a 13-year-old South Florida native and cancer survivor, the 2012-2013 Hope On Wheels National Youth Ambassador.

Hope On Wheels primarily provides research funds to non-profit children’s hospitals across the U.S. for pediatric cancer and seeks to build public awareness about the importance of this cause. The program is funded by Hyundai and its U.S. dealers. With every new vehicle sold in the U.S., Hyundai customers join Hyundai and its dealers in funding important life-saving research. Planned activities for 2012 will include a national grant donation tour, nationwide 5K race series, online social media campaign and a partnership with the Childhood Cancer Congressional Caucus. For the third consecutive year, during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, Hope On Wheels will conduct a comprehensive campaign to raise greater awareness about pediatric cancer and the need to fund critical research to find a cure.

"We see Hope On Wheels as a critical part of our mission at Hyundai,” said John Krafcik, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. "Pediatric cancer takes far too many young lives and impacts far too many families. We are proud to work with our Hyundai dealers to fund research to end this disease. We congratulate each institution receiving our grants and commend them for the important work they are doing.”

In 2012, Hope On Wheels will donate $12 million to children’s hospitals nationwide for pediatric cancer research through its signature Hyundai Scholar Grant and Hyundai Hope Grant awards. Hyundai Scholar Grants, in the amount of $75,000 each, will be awarded to 41 principal investigators who are pursuing innovative research early in their careers. As part of its Hyundai Hope Grant program, Hope On Wheels will award 36 grants to children’s hospitals across the country. This year’s Hyundai Hope Grants will be increased from $100,000 to $250,000 and winners will be announced in September.

Each of the Hope On Wheels grants will be presented to winning institutions at a Handprint Ceremony, where children diagnosed with cancer will place their handprints in colorful paint on a new Hyundai Tucson, the official vehicle of the program, to commemorate their battles with cancer. Every Handprint Ceremony celebrates the courageous lives of the children faced with cancer and brings our community of supporters together.

The first grant award for 2012 was presented to the New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. The previous grant winner received its award as part of the kick-off activities and Handprint Ceremony that took place at the New York International Auto Show. The grant recipient Dr. Julia Bender has been named a Hyundai Scholar.

“Through research, we have made great strides in understanding pediatric cancer and treatments,” said Dr. Julia Bender, New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. “However, there is so much we don’t know about the late effects of treatment and we are researching ways to deliver care without any toxicity. I am proud to be a Hyundai Scholar and truly appreciate the resources Hyundai provides doctors like me to pursue my work to improve the lives of children.”

As part of this year’s program, Hope On Wheels’ newly-named National Youth Ambassador, C.J. George, will travel the country to share his message of hope with children, families and communities at Hope On Wheels events. C.J. was diagnosed with Stage III Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma when he was just 9 years old, and after his courageous battle and treatment at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, C.J. is now 13 years old and cancer-free.

“Every 36 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. Through research 80 percent of those cancers can be cured. But that’s just not good enough,” said Gary Micallef, Hyundai dealer-owner of Hyundai of Everett in Everett, WA and newly-elected Chairman of the Hyundai Hope On Wheels Board of Directors. “The Hyundai dealers across America proudly join in this fight. This is one we must win for our children, our communities, and our future. We are proud to be a part of such an important cause.”

Also this year, research work will continue from Hyundai’s major investment in the Hyundai Cancer Institute at CHOC Children’s Hospital in Orange County. The hospital received its largest corporate gift in its history from Hyundai for the purpose of understanding DNA in young cancer patients through genomic medicine research.

"Best Value In America" x4

2012 Hyundai Elantra

Hyundai has recently received four new accolades for the Accent, Elantra, Genesis Coupe, and Tucson models. Each one of the four was awarded "Best Value in America" for 2012 from Vincentric, a Michigan-based automotive data compilation and analysis firm. Vincentric measures cost-of-ownership based on eight categories: depreciation, fuel, insurance, opportunity cost, financing, maintenance, taxes and state fees, and repairs. The cars are assessed in each state as well as the District of Columbia.

Vincentric "measures which vehicles have a lower than expected ownership costs in relationship to their market segment and price." They give insight to the automotive industry by first recognizing and then applying numerous features of automotive value. The Accent, Elantra, Genesis Coupe, and Tucson won "Best Value" for the Subcompact, Compact Sedan, Mid-Size Coupe, and Crossover Compact Entry-Level categories, respectively.

“The Accent, Elantra, Genesis Coupe and Tucson are all prime examples of models that not only meet but exceed customer expectations when it comes to value,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. Margason adds that the combination of Hyundai's great quality cars and their Assurance program decreases the overall cost of ownership.

Sneak Peek: 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

The New York International Auto Show beginning on April 4th, 2012 will unveil the brand new 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. Not too much is known about the updated CUV, but on their Twitter account the other day, Hyundai tweeted two preview pictures of the car.

Evolving from the Hyundai "Fluidic Sculpture" styling language, the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe promotes the new look: "Storm Edge". Says Hyundai, the Storm Edge design concept "captures the strong and dynamic images created by nature during the formation of a storm." The CUV sports the now-standard hexagonal grill and a lower bumper, creating a more rugged facade. This look supposedly will form the basis for other future Hyundai SUVs.

The powers-that-be are keeping the details of the 2013 Santa Fe under wraps until closer to the Auto Show. They have said the new model is built around "Refinement, Smartness and Practicality" with improved fuel economy, better use of internal space and updated in-car technologies. Few other details are known at this time.
